It is estimated that about 50 percent of dogs at the age of 5 to 11 are obese or are likely to become obese. The common causes of obesity in dogs are too much feeding and too little exercise. Many dog owners don’t realize their dogs are obese until they take their dogs to the vet.
Like human, obesity can lead to many diseases, such as diabetes, hypothyroidism, osteoarthritis, cardiopulmonary disease, hypertension and various types of neoplasia such as mammary cancer and transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder. It is important for dog owners to be aware of the unusual weight gain.
To assess your dog’s weight, you can refer to the Body Condition Score to see if your dog is overweight or underweight. It has established a nine point system where 4/9 to 5/9 are considered to be normal, 6/9 to 7/9 are overweight and 8/9 to 9/9 are obese. Aside from this method, you can tell your dog’s body condition by checking his ribs. If you can’t feel his ribs, he is probably overweight. If you can see the hourglass shaped waist after the ribs when you look down from above, then your dog is at a normal weight.
If your dog is obese, you can solve the problem by adjusting his diet and increasing the load of exercise by using some dog supplies. In particular, the energy consumed by exercise should exceed the caloric intake. Just like human, if you want to lose weight, you have to do more exercise to burn the fat.
As I mentioned in my previous post, dry food contains more calories than canned food. If your dog is on diet, you should not feed him dry food. Dog food containing high carbohydrate is not your dog’s ideal food, because carbohydrate is the main cause of fat accumulation.
To achieve the weight loss goal, you can get your dog involved in daily exercise. You can add a little fun to the exercise so that your dog won’t get bored and willing to participate. You can buy some dog supplies online such as dog toys to entertain your dog. If your dog likes to swim, take him outside and swim with him together. It is a good chance for you to interact with your dog.
Once your dog achieves the ideal weight, it is important for him to maintain. Because sudden weight loss or weight gain does no good to dogs’ health.
