We love our pets, don’t we? They are like family. But there are five big mistakes pet owners should avoid to keep all members of the family happy and healthy.
Mistake number one is not washing your hands after playing with your pet. No matter how clean your pet looks, there are just going to be some germs in their fur. You need to wash your hands and your children’s hands every time you play with them. To wash your hands the right way, use high quality soap. Wash for 20 seconds and rinse with warm water.
Number two is not thoroughly cleaning carpets and rugs. It’s true, our beloved pets shed. Its hair gets trapped in the fibers of carpets and rugs. These hairs carry bacteria. Make sure to vacuum and clean these surfaces regularly, especially you have children who play on the floor.
Mistake three is not cleaning your pet’s food and water bowl. Your pet’s water bowl is a great place for bacteria to grow. Wash your pet’s water and food bowl with warm soap and water every single day. And wash your hands after handling them. I bought my dog a stainless steel hang dog bowl which is safe and easy to wash.
Mistake four is not cleaning your pet’s toys. Your pet’s toys have been chewed on and dragged around. This makes then a breeding ground for germs. For my dog, toys are one of the most frequently used dog supplies. Regularly clean these toys with soap and water to keep you and your pet safe.
The final mistake is not washing your hands after handling pet waste. Even just a little residue can lead to illness. When you pick it up, you put it in a bag. You need to make sure you seal that, throw it in the trash and immediately come in and wash your hands with soap and water and warm water.
