Which hamster should I get?
I would always recommend a Syrian first. They are easy to handle and they tend to quite neutral with happy personalities overall. The larger size makes them easy to handle and often easy to tamed.
Should I get a male or female?
Male and female hamsters do typically have different character traits. However, not all of them behave in a certain way. Typically speaking, males tend to be calm, more relaxed and more chilled out. So they are really good hamsters to start with. Females, on the other hand, tend to be more energetic. They like to be handled and played with.
Should I get a starter kit?
This is a good question. I would advise a starter kit without a cage. And the main reason is because it is off the cage. Typically the cages are poor quality and it is quite small. Within a few weeks or few months, your hamster is going to need to new cage. It is definitely saving up the money beforehand and buying a bigger better cage.
What toys should I buy?
The type of toys that you get your hamster really depends on its personalities. There are five different types of toys that I would recommend buy for your hamster. They not only keep them entertained, but also discover what kind of personality they have. The first thing is of course a wheel that is essential for all hamsters. The second type would be any kind of climbing toys such climbing frames or bridges. The third toy is digging toys. The fourth type would be puzzle toys. The final type is any kind of hide-and-seek toys.
Which substrate should I buy?
Two of the most common names you are going to hear when it comes to your bedding are aspens and care fresh. Aspen is a type of safe wood and can be under many different brand names. Care fresh is perfectly safe for your hamster. It is very comfortable and cozy, but can be a little bit pricey.
