There have been a lot of drastic debates on dry food vs. canned food for cats. Some argue that dry food is better for cats’ teeth. While others argue that canned food helps alleviate the urinary issue and the constipation issue. If you are expecting a clear-cut answer from me, I am afraid you will be disappointed. Because I’ve searched many articles online, there is no definite answer to this question–which is better. So I am gong to share some common opinions for your reference. After all, it is up to you to choose the suitable food for your cats.

Let’s come straight to the point. Speaking of canned food and dry food, the biggest difference between them is the water content. It is estimated that canned food contains 75 percent water and dry food contains only 10 percent. So the proponents of canned food declare that cats that eat canned food have higher water intake. This helps reduce the risk of urinary or constipation issue. On the contrary, lacking of water will lead to unitary tract blockage. For another, canned food has lower calories. So it is a better choice for overweight cats.

As for the dry food, its supporters believe that chewing the kibbles can help remove debris from cats’ teeth and reduce the build-up of tartar. However, cats are not big chewers. If you observe them carefully, you will find that cats tend to shed, tear and swallow their food. So feeding dry food has a little impact to cats’ teeth.

But brushing your cat’s teeth regularly can make a big difference. It is significant for protecting your cat’s teeth. Unlike canned food, dry food has high calories, which is good for cats that are underweight. It has high carbohydrates. So it is effective to gain weight with dry food.
